Action on Addiction
We take action to disarm addiction.
Action on Addiction is the only UK charity working across the addiction field in research, prevention, treatment, professional education and family support. Our treatment centres include residential treatment at CLOUDS HOUSE and HOPE HOUSE and the SHARP structured day programmes. OUR VISION: People free from addiction and its effects
We aim to achieve this by :
Making accessible services widely available which offer the greatest hope of the fullest possible life to anyone affected by addiction, including families and children.
Establishing centres of excellence that set quality standards and define best practice.
Through the delivery of high quality professional education, helping to develop a treatment workforce capable of delivering such services.
Conducting, commissioning, supporting or taking part in research that advances our understanding of addiction, how to prevent it and how best to respond to those who suffer from it.
Positively influencing public attitudes, the media, the addiction field, potential donors and government policy to achieve the optimum level of support.
Working in partnership with other organisations if we can be more effective by doing so maintaining our independence so that the primary focus is always on the needs and interests of our beneficiaries.
At Action on Addiction we understand that recovery from drug and alcohol addiction is a challenging process and the Recovery Management Programme is designed to help you navigate this journey. At our consulting room in Chelsea, West London, we offer pre-treatment meetings for people who are considering the option of a residential treatment programme at Clouds House. We will explain clearly how our treatment programme works by exploring the timetable in detail and answering all your questions. We can provide you with a practical advice as well as emotional support to help you make your decision.
In terms of maintaining your recovery, once you have successfully completed the treatment programme at Clouds House and are drug and alcohol free we can also provide an individual post-treatment Aftercare Plan to help you maintain your abstinence. Depending on your individual needs, this will usually be a combination of Group, Individual and Family work. The Recovery Management programme will keep you connected to your treatment of experience and in touch with others in a similar position to yours. Spending time talking to other people with a shared objective in a therapeutic setting will help you to build what we call your ‘recovery capital’.

Nutrition
Carol Bowyer
Carol qualified as a state registered dietitian in 1997. In 1980 she was included in a research project at St. George’s Hospital examining hypothalamic change with dietary manipulation on a series of obese women pre and post weight loss. This initiated her interest in obesity and over the next decade worked with patients undergoing radical treatment options for obesity in the NHS.
Her second post at St. George’s Hospital included a very limited input to a professorial eating disorder service working with Arthur Crisp. During the twelve years in the post she developed the clinical dietetic service within a multidisciplinary treatment approach and extended her own training with counselling skills and group training.
Following the birth of her daughter in 1993, she began to work at Roehampton Priory Hospital. Although sufferers of eating disorders have been treated at the hospital for many years she was one of a small number of professionals bringing together a dedicated team which has gradually established treatment programmes for in-patients, day-patients and out-patients. She has singlehandedly developed and established the role of the dietitian within the multidisciplinary team. Her work involves assessment of patients’ nutritional needs with ongoing support with the process of nutritional change required throughout recovery.
In 2007 she completed a MA entitled ‘Working with people with eating disorders’ at The Tavistock which enable her to consider both the feeding process and her role as a dietitian actively involved in feeding patients from a psychoanalytical perspective.
During 2001 – 2002 Carol took time out and sailed 14,000 miles with her family around the north Atlantic triangle.
